A Healthy Diet
We are constantly being bombarded with television reports and newspaper articles about our diets.
With obesity levels rising (one study estimates that 50% of the population of the U.K. will be obese in 25 years) and activity levels declining it is important for everyone to have an understanding of what constitutes a healthy diet.
Well, where do we start? One of the main concerns relating to diet is weight control. The simplest approach to this is to understand that if you consume more energy (calories) than you burn, you will gain weight in the form of fat. Most packaged foods will have an indication of what the calorie content is, and with any fresh, unpackaged foods, the information is freely available on the internet.
Variety is the spice of life. Your diet should constitute a good mix of all foodstuffs, this will ensure that you are providing your body with all of the important nutrients that it needs.
Water is essential! You need to consume 1.5-2 litres (3-4 pints) of water (preferably filtered) per day. (More on hot days, or when you are exercising.)
Fruit and vegetables are great. A mix of different coloured fruit and vegetables will not only make your meals more pleasing to the eye, but will also taste great and provide you with essential vitamins and minerals. Remember the 5-a-day rule is a MINIMUM. You should try to eat more but remember that some fruit and vegetables are quite high in calories so should be consumed sparingly.
