The Flora London Marathon is upon us once again. It really doesn’t feel like 12 months ago that I was running around London with 30,000 other people on a cold, drizzly April morning.

So, have you seen anyone out training for the event this year? Sure there are plenty of runners about, but you can tell the ones training for a marathon. They are the ones who look as though they are suffering through, rather than enjoying their run. All good preparation for the main event!

road runnerDo you sit on the couch each year admiring the poor souls pounding around the streets thinking to yourself “I’d like to try that”? Well what’s stopping you! With the right preparation there’s no reason why you can’t.

Running is a great way to get fit and lose weight but you need to start off on the right foot (excuse the pun!).

It is ESSENTIAL that you get the right running shoes for you. Get down to a local running shop or good quality sports shop that provides gait analysis to figure out what are the best shoes for you.

Get some loose fitting, comfortable gym clothing (shorts and T-shirt are fine, you don’t need Lycra yet!)

Now you are ready to go!

Start off gently. Run for a few minutes, then walk for a few. Gradually increasing the length of time you run and shortening the walking stages. Before you know it you’ll be running non-stop for 20 minutes. Congratulations, you are now a runner. The hard work starts here!

Your progress can be vastly improved by joining a local running club or enlisting the services of a personal trainer.

Good luck and I’ll see you at the start line, in Greenwich, next year!

Please note – It is always advisable to consult your G.P. before embarking on a new exercise regime.
